Frequently
Asked
Questions

How long will my dog be there?

Time is dependent on each dogs individual needs. Size, behaviour, age, health, coat condtion and the type of service are all factors to be considered. Workin with animals can be unpredictiable. On average it takes us 2-3hrs for a small-medium size breed and 3-5hrs for a large-giant size breed. We always send a text 20 minutes before the groom is complete.

How much does grooming cost?

Grooming cost depend on factors such as size, breed, behaviour and condition of your dog. Please refer to our service page for our price list. Those prices are just estimates based on the size and breed of your dog. Please be aware those prices are just estimates and may not represent the final price. Any additional costs will be comminicated either upon drop off or during the grooming sessionbefore they are applied.

How often should I get my dog groomed?

Scheduling is determined by a few factors. For long haired breeds with haircuts longer than 1/2" we suggest every 4-6 weeks. For shorter cuts we suggest every 6-8 weeks. For double coated dogs we suggest anywhere between 6-12 weeks. Nail trims are typically recommended once a month.

Don't forget at home maintenance between grooming appoinments is essential.

Can owners stay for the groom?

While we understand wanting to stay with your dog during the appointment, we have a policy agaisnt it just like many other groomers. This is for the safety and well-being of your dog. When pet parents are present, dogs become excited and distracted which leads to unexpected movements and reactions, posing risk of injury to both dog and groomer.

This also can lead to the overall grooming process taking longer.

Letting your dog go through the grooming appointment on their own helps them create a bond and trust in the groomer as well as overall confidence in the salon.

How soon can I get my puppy groomed?

Puppies can start getting professionally groomed once they've recieved all their neccesary vaccines. This can be anywhere from 2-3 months old. These early visits are typically short and gentle, focusing on helping your puppy feel comfortable with the process.

Early exposure to grooming is crucial for your puppy to feel comforable with the grooming process as they mature.

Do you express anal glands?

We do not express anal glands at our salon.

Anal gland expression is considered a medical treatment. Veternarians are better equiped. They are also able to express them internally, which is often safer and more effective.

Can you de-matt a dog without shaving them?

Depending on the severity, matts can be very difficult to remove and may require the pet to be shaved. If we are unable to remove the matts easily, we will not cause any unneccesary stress or pain to your pet by dematting and we will have to resort to shaving. Safety and comfort is above cosmetic appearance at this time.

What is your late policy and cancellation policy?

As a small business, no-shows and cancellations have a large impact. They leave an empty time block in our schedule that could've been used by another customer and we lose money. Clients must pay depsoit when booking. Cancellations under 24 hours notice will result in us keeping the deposit. We understand that life happens and emergencies may arise. In those cases there may be an execption.

If you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, it will be rescheduled.

What is your policy regarding parasites?

Black Dog Pet Salon Inc. strives to be a flea and tick free salon. If your pet has any live fleas or an excessive amount of live ticks you will be notified immediately to come pick up your pet.

If your dog has any type of parasite that we don't feel comfortable working with then we have the right to refuse grooming your dog at any given time. You will be charged for what has been done up until that point.
